Official Guides

All the official guides have a guide to the foreign countries X-Files is aired in, and a ratings and awards guide for that season. Guides 2-6 have summary pages for the previous seasons. They are all published by Harper Prism.

The Truth is Out There; The guide to seasons one and two. Written by Brian Lowry. Price: $15
Outline: It has two to three paragraph synopsis on the episodes and a paragraph of background information on each on. There is about one or two pictures from each episode. It also goes into detail about the creation and development of the show, it talks about Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, and talks about the secondary characters. --277 pages--

Trust No One; The guide to season three. Written by Brian Lowry. Price: $15
Outline: It has deeper synopsis of each episode, going point by point through the episode (sort of like the official site). It has more pictures and longer background information as well. It comes with eight color picture pages in the middle of the book. --262 pages--

I Want to Believe; The guide to season four. Written by Andy Meisler. Price: $16
Outline: It goes further than season three with the back stories and summaries of the episodes. It has summaries, but no back stories on Redux I and II. It also has more pictures, and instead of the color pages, it has a fold out poster, of the conspiracy. --302 pages-- Here's a picture:

Resist or Serve; The guide to season five. Written by Andy Meisler. Came out December 1998. Price: $16.
Outline: Like volume three, it has very detailed information summarizing practically every line of dialogue and action from each episode. It has eight pages of color pictures. --288 pages--

The End and the Beginning; The guide to season six. Written by Andy Meisler. Came out April 2000. Price: $16.95.
Outline: Like volume five, it has very detailed information summarizing practically every line of dialogue and action from each episode and eight pages of color pictures. --299 pages--

Books of the Unexplained

Both volumes are written by Jane Goldman and talk about the science behind the X-Files; the true stories and phenomena the episodes are based on.

Volume One; Goes through the first season. Published in 1995 by Harper Prism. Price: $18.95
Outline: All pages are in color. It goes in-depth on the subjects of aliens, technological paranoia, reincarnation and other subjects as well. It relates these subjects to situations in the episodes that deal with them using pictures and quotes. --331 pages--

Volume Two; Goes through season three. Published in 1996 by Simon & Schuster. Price: $17.95
Outline: Same format as the first volume, the difference being it goes into detail about ideas and phenmena touched on in the second and third seasons. --339 pages--

Unauthorized Guides

Unauthorized Guide to The X-Files; Goes half-way through season four. Written by Hal Schuster. Published in 1997 by Prima Publishing. Price: $16.
Outline: Covers the creation of the show, Chris Carter, X-Files clones (similar shows that popped up after the X-Files started), the cast of the show, the episodes (through season 4), the conspriracy, X-Philes and fan website addresses (although I'm sure most of them aren't around anymore), and Real-Life X-Files like organizations. --228 pages--

X Marks the Spot: On Location With the X-Files; Goes through season five. Written by Louisa Gradnitzer and Todd Pittson. Published in 1999 by Arsenal Pulp Press. Price: $15.95.
Outline: If you ever plan on going to Vancouver to see formal X-Files shooting sites, you should buy this book. It goes episode by episode through season five when the show went to LA, telling about each location they shot in. It includes pictures of locations, and cast and crew members and has many production stories about the show. --185 pages--

X-Files Confedential: The Unauthorized X-Philes Compendium; Goes through season four. Written by Ted Edwards. Published in 1996 by Little-Brown. Price: $15.95.
Outline: Tells back-stories of the first four seasons' episodes (much of it not told in the official guides) and has an a to z encyclopedia of the show as well as an index. --320 pages--

The Nitpicker's Guide for X-Philes; Covers seasons one through four. Written by Phil Farrand. Published in 1997 by Dell Publishing. Price: $12.95.
Outline: This is an excellent book told with a lot of humor. Episode by episode through the fourth season, plot, production and continuity mistakes are exposed. He also reveals his own ruminations on each episode and tells the date (not airdate) and onscreen location(s). --380 pages--

Beyond Mulder and Scully: The Mysterious Characters of The X-Files; Covers seasons one through four. Written by Andy Mangels. Published in 1998 by Simon & Schuster. Price: $16.95.
Outline: It goes through each episode for seasons one through four and tells the entire cast list and a little bit of info on each actor's work experience, picking one actor to go in-depth with. It has a thorough guide to Mitch Pileggi (Skinner), Jerry Hardin (Deep Throat), Steven Williams (X), Nicholas Lea (Krycek), and William B. Davis (CSM) explaining the actor's date and place of birth, personal info (hair/eye color, weight/height), breif bio on the actor and characer, a listing of all the episodes they were in (through season four) with descriptions of their role in it, and their TV and movie credits. It also has an actor-index. --247 pages--
